|A little more research has established that

|This seems to indicate that Windows 98 has acquired some WinNT or WinXP files.

|I tracked down and replaced all the WinXP files I could find,

What did you use as a metric to identify those?

|renaming them in Safe Mode from .DLL to .XP

|But my system then wouldn't boot up.

I'll bet that it DID "boot up".
cache of http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/glossary/gb.html

What it DIDN'T do is "load Windoze" completely.

|It got quite close once, but Explorer crashed at the last.

At any point did you consider SFC? System File Checker does have its caveats
cache of http://www.rickrogers.org/sfc.htm
but it sounds like you were really up against it in trying to avoid a reinstall.

|There are obviously more XP files lurking about that I haven't been able to find.
|I finally gave up, and restored the troublesome XP files.
|
I'll point to SFC again.

|My solution was to go back to the registry as it existed when I bought the PC,
|which still existed on the hard disk
|as various backup files scattered across the disk (named AUTOEXEC.1ST,
|CONFIG.1ST, MSDOS.SY_, SYSTEM.1ST, USER.1ST, SYSTEM.IN_, and WIN.IN_).

Yeah. That's pretty much the definition of "desperate".

|There must, I suppose, be a way to recreate
|the registry entries that support SNDVOL32.EXE
| - but after quite a lot of trying I couldn't find how to do that.

With an M$ OS, you sometimes have to see the wisdom of the shorter route:
just bite the bullet and reinstall. 8-(
ISTM you will end up doing just as much work (perhaps more) WRT installed apps
compared to what you would have had to do with a fresh install.
Are you not finding that?

FYI:
The Webmaster's defaults here are moronic IMO.
If you make sure the **No preview** box near the bottom of this page
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/config
is NOT ticked, you could see what your posts look like
BEFORE submitting them.

One quirk of the way this site is scripted is:
an "On" (capitalized) which starts a line will result in 4 linefeeds preceding it.
It also screws up subsequent blockquoting.

Doing something like this
.On
(starting that line with a non-alphabetic character) will override this
