|Using a Compaq Deskpro Pentium II, with W98 SE. Over 4 Gigs of Memory.

W98 can use up to 512MB of RAM without any tricks.
With tricks, you can use up to 1GB.

4GB of RAM will certainly cause problems.

You aren't calling hard disk space "memory" are you?
