Sounds like you should be posting to the XP forum
where there is a greater chance that you will find others who have done that.

|and I couldn't finish the update because there was a missing "COMMAND.COM" file.

I don't run XP, but that makes no sense to me.
"[F]inish the update" sounds like you got the the point where you reboot.
At that point, I would think XP's Command Processor would take over
--and *that* is NOT named COMMAND.COM.

|The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\HIMEN.SYS
|There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 6

If the XP install is looking for a previous install of 98,
why don't you just GIVE it that?  ISTM, the fastest way would be
do a Custom install of 98 and leave virtually everything out.
You're going to cream it all later anyway.  Right?

...and if you can't do a legit install of 98,
you definately have no call to be posting here.
