Just a suggestion in a different direction:
First determine what brand drive you have, then go to the maker's sit to support
downloads section, makers like Western digital or Seagate/Maxtor have various Diagnostic
programs and format tools which can boot up on their on DOS ( via CD method) to check
out their drives or format their disks in a GUI/windows type interface.
That might be a easier way to accomplish the ends you seek.
