|does anyone know how to change the windows 98 splash screen using regedit?

Wrong tool.  It only requires a text editor.[1]

This guy even makes a retrograde move easy (in case you didn't make backups):

My preference is to dump the M$ advertisment so I can see what's going on
(text only).
