Do a clean install. You need to boot from the XP CD. Follow the prompts to delete the Partition, Then you create a new one, Format, and the install starts. Just read all the prompts.

Disconnect all the external devices before you start, like Printers, and Scanners etc.

Also have your old 98 CD handy. If you bought upgrade XP CD, one of the prompts is to insert 98 to verify you quailify for upgrade.

You may need to enter Bios first to set your CD rom to be first Boot device.
