I am absolutely amazed that it has taken some people nearly 10 years to figure out
that their Windows 98 CD is bootable. I guess in all that time they never forgot
to remove their Win98 CD from the drive before shutting their computer down only
to wonder what the hell is going on when it boots from the CD next time they power
their computer up.

If anyone has Nero installed, they can stick their CD into the drive and in Windows
explorer right-click on the drive icon, click properties and then the "Volumes" tab.
It tells you whether your CD is bootable or not.

If you have ISO editing software installed (I use UltraISO), make an ISO of your
bootable CD, save the boot sector of the ISO as a "boot image file" .bif, then change
the extension of the boot image file from .bif to .iso and open it with the ISO editing
program and you can see the files inside the boot sector.

Project for a rainy day: Bootable Win95 CD.

1. Make an ISO of your bootable Win98 CD.

2. Delete all the files and folders from the ISO and save. You will end up with an
ISO containing only the boot sector.

3. Open the empty ISO with a hex editor. Search for occurances of 98. SOME of these
can be changed from 98 to 95. That includes instances where:
   A. 98 is part of a string of text.
   B. 98 points to the WIN98 folder on the CD.

In many instances 98 appears as random parts of the code of the files inside the
boot sector, or as part of the copyright information. These instances should NOT
be changed.

4. Import the contents of your Windows 95 CD into your customised empty ISO and save
as a new ISO.

5. Burn your ISO to CD. You now have a bootable Win95 CD complete with the correct
prompts for Windows 95.

By the way, providing you have licensed copies of both Win95 and Win98 CD's I consider
this to be "fair use".
