It sounds like you have USB enabled in CMOS Setup.
Now it's down to the W98-to-device adopto-kit (the driver).

Nathan Lineback's generic (universal?) W98 device driver
is even better than Maximus Decim's
(the cached links in the other page are broken now anyway).
