8-)  A (bootable) Linux Live CD is a nice tool to have around.
It can do an end-run around anything M$ "protects" and most things M$ screws up.

Indeed, an OS doesn't even need to be running to implement this (useful) technique;
it even works when the OS of the target machine is BSoD'd / Kernel Panic'd:
