You are trying to change the resolution or the bit depth, maybe both?? You can't
change the pixels. Pixels are the physical dots on the monitor's screen.

If Windows won't accept a new resolution or color depth, which is what the applications
may demand to run, then you either have a driver issue with the video card, the monitor
profile that Windows is using will not allow a higher resolution to be displayed,
or the video card just doesn't have enough memory to give the application what it
needs to run and thereby can't give you the needed resolution. Can be a combo of
all three...

Windows has generic monitor profiles that sometimes must be changed if say you were
running a resolution of 640x480 or 800x600 and now want to run 1024x768 for example.
The manufacturer of the monitor may have included the profile and it can be installed
into Windows, so that Windows knows how to address the monitor properly.

Both the video card and the monitor (and/or the monitor profile) must be capable
of running the resolution you select or Windows won't change it. If it is an old
CRT monitor, it will display a full color depth (24/32 bit settings) so color depth
isn't an issue for the monitor. Older monitors do however have a resolution limitation.
Is this a CRT or an LCD monitor?

You need to know the maximum resolution that the monitor can display, as well as
what your video card can display. Higher resolution and color depth takes more memory
so sometimes you must lower one to achieve the other. Just depends on what is more
critical to the application. In some instances, the video system/adaptor won't have
enough memory to do either and the application won't run at all..
