J.R. pointed you to one mode of being a puppet of MS, but another is spawned by the
WinUP site itself. It will be found to be listed in the Add/Remove Programs list
as "Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification". So Remove it and you won't
be hijacked by the useless bot since there will never be another new update available
EVER.

In order to use the WinUP site you will have to have IE 5.50 SP2 or IE 6.00 SP1
- the site does not work with other IE versions with Win98. If you insist on installing the updates from the WinUP site, do yourself a big favor and only do one large one or two small ones at a time since the quickest way to getting a non-booting door stop is to let the WinUP site default to 16 massive updates/downloads in one shot. The Catalog site allows downloading of the updates for archiving to CD or whatever media you want.
