Computer fails boot-up.

I turn on the computer and it looks like it is going to boot up normally. Then it
gets stuck at a blank screen with a curser in the top left corner of the screen.
Nothing happens after that. I have to get this computer going so I can get some
files off of it. Of course this has to happen as I am looking for a new computer
and I didn't get all my files backed up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
