Do you realize that the structure of posts on this site is NOT "flat"
but is instead "threaded"?
http://www.google.com/search?q=define:thread
(The ones that include "forum" or "Usenet" are apt.)
This means you should respond TO THE PERSON WITH THE PROBLEM
NOT to other people responding to the OP.
|You can get a used Win 2000 OS for at most $15-20 on e-Bay.
|
You won't be buying much. W2000's End of Life is slated for July 13, 2010.
You can get a copy of Ubuntu Linux for ZERO COST.
Canonical just released Version 8.04 (Hardy Heron)
which is a "Long Term Support" version.
Their offerings (open source software) are based on Debian Linux
and Canonical is dedicated to a 6-month release cycle for new versions.
When you *do* want to use a newer version of Linux, *that* will be FREE as well.
If, rather than the GNOME desktop environment,
you prefer KDE (the K Desktop Environment)--most former Windoze users do--
you could just as easily get Kubuntu.
If your hardware is of limited power, there's Xubuntu
which uses the much slimmer XFCE desktop environment.
...and Linux adores old hardware.
Linux supports more hardware (OLD AND NEW) than any other operating system.
|Go for it, you won't regret it.
|
Go for Linux instead. It's FREE (gratis and libre)
and won't have you stuck on the perpetual payware upgrade cycle
imposed by Microsoft products (and other Windoze-compatible applications).
Getting the (free) apps from the Linux repositories and installing them
will be like walking thru the gates of Emerald City.
|The only thing you will miss are the headaches and limitations of a legacy OS.
|
...and since you will have to learn new stuff anyway,
take this opportunity to throw off the shackles of M$ and payware.
...and **not** having to reboot for the slightest tweak
(stupid Micro$oft; stupid Windows Registry) will show you how an OS *should* be built.
