Ah. It seems I'm barking up the wrong tree.

|used Brasero from within Ubuntu to burn the exact same ISO
|on the exact same burner[...]and this time it was "bootable" in my other box.

Software (not "Freeware") makes that so do-able. 8-))
It's great that you got this sorted out--and enabled a demonstration
of how crippling using proprietary payware software/OSes can be).
