I am posting this information because it works and there may be others who want to
do the same thing. If you want to copy files off a Windows 98 First Edition operating
system and do not have a CD/DVD burner on the Windows 98 FE machine, there is a way.
Go to http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php and follow the instructions
exactly as they are on the page. I did, and my Windows 98 FE machine recognized
my USB mass storage device. The two downloads you need from this web page are free
– your only expense should be buying the USB device and a CD or DVD on which to burn
it.
I had to reboot my machine once more than the instructions said, but other than that,
this worked very well.
I hope those with the same problem will find this information helpful, and those
of you who use this site a lot will become a lot less smug.
