It depends if your version of WinXP was an upgrade for Win98? If its an upgrade then you need a basic Windows OS installed to start with. If its a stand alone version of WinXP then you could format the drive and do a fresh install but I don't think its going to save you any space because I don't think you have much. What size is your hard drive? How much memory do you have? Even if you did a fresh install you will still need your additional hardware drivers, sound card, graphics card, printer, scanner etc because you may find that your drivers aren't compatable with WinXP.
