I've got this stupid Windows 98 machine with a really difficult problem. It will not receive an IP address via DHCP. I have narrowed it down with network sniffers to the fact that it will not "see" the DHCP reply which is sent via a broadcast. It sends the request and can not see the reply. If I turn on promiscuous mode on the network adapter with tcpdump, then suddenly it is able to see the broadcast, and will receive the IP address immediately. I've completey reformatted and reinstalled Win98, and I have replaced the network adapter. This doesn't make any sense to me. Its a tough one, but I was hoping someone might know what it is about.
