Folks that don't run Windoze don't need ANY anti-virus apps. 8-)
|you only need one[,] else they conflict
|
Something that *should* be second-nature knowledge to every Windoze user.
|as well as hog system resources.

There's a lot of that WRT Windoze "security".
(Think: an ever-larger virus definitions file on your HDD and in RAM
--plus multiple instances of that for the multiple anti-spyware apps.)
It all looks pretty silly to people using Unix-like systems
(e.g. Linux--which is FREE).
|I use AVG 7.5

Grisoft had a brain-dead (pre-fetching) fiasco recently
that should have them on everyone's $#!+ list.
|but I don't have it running all the time.

Yup.
A good time to crank up your anti-virus app is *after you download something*
and BEFORE you open it.
Of course, this ASSuMEs that your BEHAVIOR is *by default* security-conscious
(e.g. you don't click on everything that pops up on your screen).
Your FIRST layer of defense should be WETWARE (your brain).
Most of this junk comes thru email attachments.
(Clicking **links** in (HTML) email is also a good way to get infected.)

|AVG 7.5 ends its support today unless you have a paided version

8-( Fewer and fewer vendors are supporting M$'s 10-year-old OS.
...and if those vendors are purposely and unnecessarily breaking their apps
by including code that is NT-specific (i.e. W2000/XP/Vista), shame on them.
Maybe it's time to consider a FREE non-M$ OS that doesn't need this nonsense.
I'll bet there's a
bunch of local nerds (at your nearest community college??)
that could fix
you up with something inherently secure.
TO ADDRESS YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION,
here's another gratis AV: ClamWin
That one is Software
Libre (not just gratis)
for when Avast pulls the same thing that AVG is doing.
Keith:
If you're going to use the **Check this box to preserve your spacing** thing,
you should learn how to use the and/or markup in
HTML.
