You are currently using the wrong driver file.

Windows 98 was created in 1998, so it does not automatically understand devices that did not exist in 1998. You must obtain a device driver file, from the device's manufacturer, and it must be one that is actually *stated* to be for use with Windows 98.

It is probable that the current driver file you have (from your Win 98 CD) is not the correct one, since the device is NOT being recognised by Windows.

Go to the website of the device's manufacturer and download a driver that is expressly stated to be for Windows 98.

Then try manually updating the driver.

First, delete the old (faulty) settings. Start the computer normally, WITHOUT the new device plugged in. Then open the Device Manager (Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manager).

If there is an entry present for the device, highlight the entry by clicking it, then delete it (click on REMOVE).

Then restart the computer normally, WITHOUT the new device plugged in. Then install the driver you downloaded, by running the installation or setup program that came with it; then shut down the computer normally. Now, finally, plug in the new device, then reboot.

On this reboot the plug-and-play wizard should automatically install the new device with the correct driver(s), if it can find them.

The locations to point the update function (i.e. the update wizard) to, when trying to find the correct file (which the installation program should have put in one of these locations), are:

C:\WINDOWS
C:\WINDOWS\INF
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
C:\WINDOWS\IOSUBSYS
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS

Finally, check for a successful outcome by opening the Device Manager (Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manager) to make sure the device is present and has no problems.

If it has a problem (e.g. a question mark or exclamation mark against it), highlight the device in Device Manager, then click PROPERTIES and go through the procedure for manually updating its driver. You will have to point the update wizard at each in turn of the five locations I mentioned above.
