*I* didn't make the error. This forum is threaded.
Next time you reply to a post, scroll to the bottom of the page.
If the post to which you want to respond is NOT in italics and NOT underlined,
click the post that contains the points on which you want to comment
and reply to **that**. (Don't just reply *anywhere* in the thread.)

You may want to change your forum preferences

to "tree format".

The moral of this story is:
Most hardware you can buy off the shelf ASSuMEs it will be used with Windoze XP.
(Vista has thrown yet another monkey wrench into expectations,
as driver support from manufacturers ranges from passable to abysmal to none.)

|However there are still[...]new motherboards
|that still have drivers for win98SE[.] research, research.

Yes. If it doesn't EXPLICITLY say it supports your OS (and *version*, if using M$),
ASSUME THAT THOSE DEVICE DRIVERS DO NOT EXIST
and move on to a vendor WHO SUPPORTS *YOU*.

If you have *old* hardware and want to know if it will work under a *new* OS,
do your homework:
Start by reading the packaging/advertisement.

As the OP *understood* that W98 support did NOT exist for his MoBo,
this whole thread is silly.

How he expected someone to produce M$-compatible device drivers out of thin air
(when the manufacturer hadn't bothered to) is just clueless.

Maybe he was thinking of Linux's path to remedy the non-existent driver problem:
