He hasn't mentioned which browser he uses.
My bet is he uses that fragile, vulnerable PoS I call Internet Exploder.

I'm also betting he also does other dangerous things
that will corrupt a Windoze install

and got his M$Office executables infected in some combination of these ways.
It would appear that there was a tiny window in time
between when he last used M$O sucessfully and when he got infected
--and a VERY tiny window between when he got infected and when it was detected.
(I also note that he doesn't mention what prompted him to get AVG.)
The solution to this is simple and obvious:
Disinfect the files or reinstall the app.
...and if your AV flags files as **infected**, WHY WOULD YOU IGNORE THAT?
People who are going to do that kind of nonsense
should be using an OS that isn't so easily infected.
