If your hard drive is losing files that is not a good sign.
First look in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder to see if SHLWAPI.DLL is still there. If
the file is missing then download the latest cumulative security update for your
version of Internet Explorer and your version of Win98. The latest version of SHLWAPI.DLL
for your system will be included.
You will find links to the most recent patches for IE on win98 here:
http://erpman1.tripod.com/iewmpupd.html
Note that the updates on this page are for 98SE not the original 98. If you are using
98 first edition you will have troll through Microsoft's Internet Explorer website
to find the final official patch. Lotsa luck.
If you are using your win98 computer offline and have no plans to connect it to the
internet then I wouldn't go any higher than Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 on win98. On
my computer I noticed that Windows Explorer was LESS STABLE after installing IE6
or IE6SP1. That goes for both 98FE and 98SE.
