Hi, gewg. All of you have come up with a wealth of advice and I thank you all for
it. Now referring to those drivers:
I have two universal generic drivers. I couldn't remember which one actually did
the trick last time. I tried to load each one in turn manually, but I vaguely remember
now that they didn't "like" each other. This might have caused some of the latest
trouble because I did not attempt to remove one before trying to install the other.
Well, whatever, the damage is done now. I have tried to run the w98 computer with
a normal start and it now goes straight into "Install W98 mode." It gets to the
install hardware part and then comes up with error messages. I could print them out
for you if you like. When one goes through the messages, it always ends up with the
computer either freezing or shutting down. Actually putting the "Installation disc"
in also ends up with the same result. I also used the boot disc that I had made and
selected to "start with CD ROM assistance". This got me into DOS mode. I still remember
my DOS. But the problem here is that I can't get the computer to change its directory
to the C (hard ) drive. It refuses. It stays with the A (floppy) drive. Phew. It
appears that the suggestion of taking the drives out of the W98 computer and piggy-backing
them onto the C drive in my XP machine might be the only solution. I'm just not sure
how to do this.
