I hear what you are saying.

The original question wasn't about running DOS apps however.

Have a look at the entries Keith Stanier has in his in AUTOEXEC.BAT file (see his 
reply in this thread). Creative sound card and a keyboard.

As for the virus scanner, I am thinking back to McAfee Virus Scan 4.51. The option 
to insert a command into AUTOEXEC.BAT was available as recently as McAfee Virus Scan 
version 7. Admittedly that was several years ago.

If you have McAfee Virus Scan Commandline, the option to insert a command into the 
AUTOEXEC.BAT file is still there, although not for much longer as the latest Virus 
Scan engine has dropped support for DOS and the 9x line.
