I was looking for a solution like this too, that's how I found this thread. I tried
this and you are right - it doesn't work. So I searched a little more and found something
that worked for me: "Reporter DeNagger I"

Not free, but 99 cents is almost free. Worth my time, especially when I can reuse
it whenever I reinstall my XP (which unfortunately needs to be done too often, I
miss the days when I used to turn on my stereo system and it would simply work, no
bugs no patches no spyware, I guess it's over).
