You have to have paid close attention when signing up
(and not have just rushed thru your preferences--blindly accepting the defaults).
If you are going to continue to post to this site,
the first 2 paragraphs here are worth reading:

(Proper choices will also address the numerous typos in your post.)
|Thanks for the search Gewg.

No sweat. I always say pass along a favor and it will find its way back to me.
|I like how it finds topics, using the right wording.

There are a bunch of tricks that can help zero-in on *exactly* what you want.
Here's a document that lists most of them:
cache of http://cai.au.edu/Training/Content/Google/Google.pdf
Some examples of what I hoped you would home in on:
http://google.com/search?q=site:annoyances.org+inurl:win98+"shutdown-supplement"+kb
NOTE: Though annoyances.org defaults to Google for its searches,
there was a time when Google was doing a HORRIBLE job of indexing this site.
Yahoo's syntax is still playing catch-up with Google's powerful tricks (e.g. wildcards),
but Yahoo's larger database is often more useful:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=site:annoyances.org+inurl:win98+"windows+98se+shutdown+supplement"+kb
|[...]I dont want to change BIOS since mine is dated 7-15-95. Don't think I can.

Check at the site of the MoBo's manufacturer. They should have for download
an executable that will make a bootable floppy which can be used to flash the BIOS.
|[Meanwhile], at this site, i browsed topics
|and came [across] a recent autoexec.bat topic.
|I was wondering why I have 7 autoexex. entries in C:/
|
It's because of crappy installers that take liberties without asking permission
--probably from 16-bit apps (Win3.x-compatible).
Back in the DOS days, I had a single line in my AUTOEXEC.BAT:
STARTPC
That ran STARTPC.BAT (which was my real AUTOEXEC.BAT).
The jerks could try to add all the garbage they wanted;
*I* was the one that decided what passed muster and got the OK for permanence.
Needless to say,
I was very angry at all the crap that gets pulled behind your back in Windoze.
|1 responder mentioned that "you shouldn't have any".
|
That's right--unless you are *specifically* running a DOS app.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1236885819
|I found 2 entries in msconfig-autoexec.bat tab.
|1 was for my av (AVG) which starts a 'boot up scanner...
|
IN DOS. ...and running that will slow Startup times by a significant factor.
|the other [for] autocad.
|
Unless you run AutoCAD from DOS, that process sounds like complete crap.
It sounds like you are saying you edited out those entries from the file;
try disabling the processing of AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS **completely**
and see if anything you normally use is missing.
(Your Startup times *will* shorten--perhaps noticibly.)
|By un-checking these 2[...][,][initial] information is shown,
|including CPU temperature.
|
If the CALL command is used to execute a process from a batch file,
after completing that process, the system returns to the next line in the batch file.
If you *don't* use CALL--or if you start Windoze
(or another process that doesn't terminate)--the batch file loses control.
This is similar to the difference between GOTO and GOSUB in BASIC.
...then again, maybe you got rid of the stupid *clouds* screen.
|[Temperature] was a whopping 45 degrees C. Normally runs about 30 degees C.
|It's now at 32 degreec C, after cleaning.
|A while back, I was having other problems,
|and found that cleaning the CPU heatsink helped[...]
|Clean heat-sink from accumulated dust with a small brush
|(old [toothbrush] can work); re-assemble in reverse.
|
It sounds like you missed one important step in the process and lucked out:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1127346860
|My CPU temperature has dropped from 45degees C...to #32 degrees[...]
|So far, this has made a difference, although 1 time during the process it did hang.
|
See shutdown-supplement link (above).
|This is something easier [than] google results, which [don't] mention HEAT.
|
There's nothing *special* about the Shutdown process;
the system could have locked up at _any_ time due to CPU heat.
|In conclusion, I recommend cleaning your heat-sink,
|since accumulated dust will make your CPU run hotter.
|
...making sure you include the one important step.
|I don't see this task in any of the solutions.
|
I found a post by Carol J (Ms. Eagle) that covered this some time back.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1109033905
...and if you've got dust on your power supply intake/filter,
there's a high probability you'll see it on your heatsink as well.
