I mainly use an older browser by avant(novocon browser I got with my old dial-up
service...I have dsl now). I thought my bank needed IE6 to work, but novocon/avant
works too. After using novocon/avant today, the computer shut down OK. But, after
using IE6, it didn't shut down properly. Appears that's the problem. And, won't use
it anymore as you suggested.
"Your techniques are good (and better with a little bit of database behind them)"
What kind of database?.
Sure, I may be WAY behind....I used a sliderule in college. Win98 seems to work fine
for what I use it for...mainly Word, excel, adobe, nikon photo, and autocad. I'm
not a gamer, so I don't need much more. If i'm going to do prolonged shopping or
searching on the net, I'll use the xp laptop, which is faster. I have avant browser
on that. Although I have done considerable surfing on this computer before the laptop.
Thanks for all the good info...took awhile to digest. I tried firefox years ago,
but didn't like it for some reason. I'll give it another try, and see if it improves
web surfing. (or opera). With my novocon browser, I can disable ActiveX, scripts,
and Java applets. Also has a pop-up blocker.
Guess I've been pretty lucky insofar as viruses. Haven't had any virus problem on
this puter for 6 years I've been using it. I had Norton av for about 3 years, and
switched to AVG after that. Both seemed to do a decent job.
I've heard about Linux, but I'm not that computer savvy to change my OS. I don't
think autocad by autodesk can run on Linux.
Nice list of software at msfn.
"WRT Win98SE, it is simple to avoid microsoft.com:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1153848355
Scroll down that page
and note that it is a sizeable download if you are bandwidth-challenged
--but you should be able to eschew microsoft.com from that point on WRT files."
WRT=? Is this Windows 98SE and all the updates?....1 responder mentions you may end
up with a non-bootable machine.
I was wondering where I could get all the updates if I re-installed win98. It probably
wouldn't hurt to get all the crap out, but right now it seems to be running pretty
good. I saved alot of money by not upgrading the OS...and donating to M$.
Thanks again for all the great info. Gave me lots of stuff to try....now all I need
is more time.
