Avant isn't really a browser; it's a shell for M$'s rendering engine
(aka "Trident"; aka "MSHTML"):

|I thought my bank needed IE6 to work, but novocon/avant works too.
|
Because it's still using the same INSECURE core as IE does.
I don't think that when you get Avant that the engine comes with it;
it just uses whatever version of IE (MSHTML) already exists.
It sounds like your bank is clueless and is using ActiveX.
This is the LEAST secure way of doing something online.
It makes me angry when a business tries to lock me into a technology.
When that requirement is Windoze/ActiveX, I really lose it.
|After using novocon/avant today, the computer shut down OK.
|But, after using IE6, it didn't shut down properly.
|Appears that's the problem.
|
Since it's an intermittent problem and they both use Trident, I have my doubts.
|And, won't use it anymore as you suggested.
|
Don't use Avant either; it's still MSHTML. I gave you several more-secure options.
||"Your techniques are good (and better with a little bit of database behind them)"

|What kind of database?.
|[...]
|Thanks for all the good info...took awhile to digest.
|
That database.
|Sure, I may be WAY behind....I used a sliderule in college.
|
Yup. I think my class was the last that was required to buy a Pickett.
My freshman year, the department bought an HP-35 (when they were $400!)
and an HP-45 the following year.
|I tried firefox years ago, but didn't like it for some reason.
|
Same here. What I considered to be *basic* preferences,
weren't available though the point-and-click menus;
you had to look up the names of the parameters and
tweak them in about:config (unlike the suite, which I had been using for years).
|I'll give it another try, and see if it improves web surfing. (or opera).
|
Like I said, I use SeaMonkey,
so don't forget about that if the others don't suit you.
|With my novocon browser, I can disable ActiveX, scripts, and Java applets.
|
IIRC, however, it still has Browser Helper Objects enabled
--another big infection vector with the MSHTML engine.
|Also has a pop-up blocker.
|
You're taking me back to last century
when I was still tweaking M$'s rudimentary browser.
Like I said, I haven't felt the need for M$'s app for many years.
The other (Gecko/Presto) stuff is SO much better.
|Guess I've been pretty lucky insofar as viruses.
|Haven't had any virus problem on this puter for 6 years I've been using it[...]
|
It's largely about behavior; common sense goes a long way.

It also helps if you're not addicted to things like porn. 8-)
|I've heard about Linux, but I'm not that computer savvy to change my OS.

Like I said, you can make the switch to Free Software 1 app at a time
(cross-platform apps are the norm in that realm).
Firefox/SeaMonkey is a good start;
if you choose FF, look into its sibling, the Thunderbird email client.
Opera is ported to all platforms as well (thought that is just freeware--not libre).

I also mentioned that you can boot to a "LiveCD"
and run Linux from that **without installing it** (for a test drive or to practice).
Having one of those around--and being familiar with it--
can save your bacon when Windoze takes a dump.
Ever try to get something off a broken Windoze box using just DOS?
Most folks are just lost without a GUI and Linux loads to a graphical desktop
--even from the removable media.
Don't hold your breath waiting for M$ to do that.
|I don't think autocad by autodesk can run on Linux.
|
I'm pretty sure it will be quite a while before that gets ported to Linux. 8-(
Now I'm wondering how/if it runs under WINE/Linux
(a recursive acronym for Wine Is Not an Emulator)
--which is a reverse-engineered replacement
for M$'s Application Programming Interfaces (the core of Windoze).
|Nice list of software at msfn.
|
Yeah. It's nice to know what's still available and supported.
Kudos to the folks keeping the list current.
||WRT Win98SE, it is simple to avoid microsoft.com[...]

|WRT=?
|
"With regard to". When you encounter techie slang, this is a useful trick:

|Is this Windows 98SE
|
No. MSFT still doesn't let that get out for free.
|and all the updates?.
|
Yes--in a once-only, all-in-one download.
|1 responder mentions you may end up with a non-bootable machine.
|
Hysteria. Note that Phil didn't link to any actual reports(s) of failures.
There is also another (lesser) effort to which he may have been referring.
Again: No link to any actual report(s).
In both cases, the files come straight from microsoft.com
--they're just much more convenient when aggregated and local to you.
...and some
people can mess up a ... ......
|I was wondering where I could get all the updates if I re-installed win98.
|
Yup. They *are* available thru M$, but this download is the EASY way.
|It probably wouldn't hurt to get all the crap out,
|but right now it seems to be running pretty good.
|
Using a Registry Cleaner is a good intermediate technique.
|I saved alot of money by not upgrading the OS...and donating to M$.
|
Amen. That's one reason I advocate Linux
--though no Product Activation is a bigger one.
|Thanks again for all the great info.
|Gave me lots of stuff to try....now all I need is more time.
|
I wanna make sure you get your money's worth. 8-)
