DNS error

Was unable to get online via Verizon DSL last week. Verizon said connection was fine
(modem looks fine too), and had me call Compaq/HP. They couldn't figure out the problem
despite working with me a long time. I was getting "hard drive failure imminent"
messages, so I installed a new one this week. Pre-hard drive change I was using XP,
but I only have Win98 disks, so I'm back on that now. I still can't get online via
IE (no other browser installed), and Verizon said it's not their problem because
192.168.1.1 in the address bar brings up a DSN error message.
Here's what I get when I run ipconfig/all in DOS:
WIN98 IP Configuration includes --
DNS Server: correct Verizon DNS
NetBIOS Scope ID: blank
Node type: Hybrid
NetBIOS Scope ID: blank
IP Routing Enabled: No
WIN Proxy: No
NetBIOS REsoulution Uses DNS: Yes
For Ethernet Adapter:
Description: PPP Adapter
Physical address: 44-45-53-54-00-00
DHCP Enabled: No
IP Address: (shows correct Verizon number)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway: blank
Primary WINS Server: shows Verizon #
Any suggestions? I'm unemployed and job hunting, otherwise I'd just hit the store
for something newer. Thank you!
