I had this problem once, here's what happened:
I was frustrated that I couldn't find a driver for my monitor, but I was able to
get around that. It turns out the real problem was with recognition of my video card.
I went to Device Manager (Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager)
and Monitor was not listed as one of the items on the tree/list. But under the category
"Other devices" were a few items listed with questions marks as their icons, meaning
they were not recognized. One of them was called Video something or other. I clicked
on it & I was walked through some process (Reinstall Driver?) that got my computer
to recognize my monitor (not the specific brand, but just that it was a monitor other
than Default Monitor.) After that, Monitor was added to my tree/list. Then, an important
step: Restart computer. When I went back to Display Settings, I was able to adjust
my screen resolution & color quality so that my monitor finally looked normal. I
hope I haven't left out any steps, sorry I'm not very technical. HTH
