The weakest link in a computer is the bronze bearing in the hard drive. It is porous
and has a tiny amount of oil in it. It creates some fine bronze powder in it and
when the oil dries up, it jams.
Everyone is apalled at this but it works for me. Beat up your computer.
That is, when it starts, tap the drive (or slam the whole computer) and it will shake
the bearing enough to get it started. (My computer has dents on it.) I once did
that to a balky drive for 2 months every morning because I was too lazy to drive
15 minutes to the discount computer store and get another drive. Finally one morning
that wasn't working either for quite a while. So I got the new drive and connected
it and got the old one to start one more time and I copied it.
I also swim in shark infested waters. (Hey, it was a school of migrating hammerheads
and they have their mouths way down on their throats which makes it very difficult
to bite a human.)
So, open the case and try tapping the drive as it boots up. If that works you have
a dying bearing but you can make it live long enough to copy the information over.
Good luck.
