Windows Explorer Lost all Paths and Files in "My Documents"

Windows Explorer has lost reference to all the files and folders in "My documents" (except one - see below). They do not show up in a "Browse" either. I know they are there because I can do a "Find" for the names of files I remember and they are there in their proper path.

I think this has to do with sharing, or sharing access passwords.

Here is what I was doing when they were lost. The win 98 is set up for sharing. With a Vista computer I tried to copy a file to the Win 98. That file already existed on the win 98. I expected to get a message "Do you want to replace?" I did not get the message. Seemed nothing happened.

That (I think) is when all paths and files in "My documents" -- except the path to that file I tried to replace -- disappeared from the Windows Explorer display (in Vista).

They were still visible in the Windows 98 machine. I thought there was a problem with sharing, so I intended to turn sharing off/on in win98. As soon as I turned it off and rebooted, the paths disappeared in the win 98 also.

I have been File Sharing with Vista for more than a year with few problems.

More Info
Operating Systems:
(1) Win 98 (computer that lost files)
(2) Vista (computer viewing files on the win 98)
Viewing settings = show hidden files
Share Passwords: No passwords were ever set, and sharing access never restricted.
Users: There are no "users"
