Indeed. A fresh copy of Linux will run on the old hardware and it is FREE.
The OP can then say "Goodbye" to infections.

Actually, to make sure you get EVERYTHING (including any boot sector viruses),
you'd want to blast away all the partitions too.
As has been noted before in this forum,
depending on M$ software to do that properly is fraught with disappointment.
You *could* use a bootable Linux disk's FDISK utility to prep the HDD.
(While M$ software understands almost NO filesystems,
Linux understands almost EVERY filesystem, including FAT32.)
Another alternative is to use a disk wiping utility like (Free Software) DBAN
before using M$'s FDISK.

We at least have concensus on that.
The silliest part of trying to "disinfect" a Windoze system is that
THE SOFTWARE TO DO THAT GETS INSTALLED ON THE INFECTED SYSTEM.
