As stated, it's just *a skin* that uses the old M$ rendering engine
--and has all the ancient security holes of that thing just waiting to get infected.

There are some print-to-PDF utilities that also look tiny--until you realize
that you have to download and install GhostScript to make them work.
Same thing here: You're using the old (junky) engine
and all you got was a prettier user interface; underneath it's still a skunk.
...and if you run 98Lite on the box to neuter IE, the skin then does nothing.

|Before I commit any of these oldies to the *nix path,

A decent disto comes with all the basics (it's the big reason I pointed to that one)
--and the package manager gets you any other (native Linux) apps you need.
What is it that you think you need WINE for?

|I wanted a CPU with an active cooler, not a passive one

Isn't Texas cooling off?
Shouldn't have to worry about that again for many months. 8-)

|I have no huge hard-on against Microsoft or Windows[...]
|doesn't mean I[...]haven't pre-ordered Win7 Home edition for $50.
|
{Shakes head in disbelief}
Shoot, you could throw a W7 launch party and have gotten it for free
(the going price for ones and zeros these days, BTW).

|I don't know how to interpret that "ecosystem" warning.
|
Well, if I had been talking about some version of Windoze,
I would have said "which variant"; by saying "guess which ecosystem"
I meant that all the REALLY good stuff only works in the *n?x realm.
The tide has turned and it doesn't favor Redmond.

The roll-your-own-customized-bootable/installable-distros thing
has it all over Bart PE or slipstreaming or anything else you can do
with the hobbled-to-make-it difficult-to-install-multiple-times hoops
that M$ makes you jump thru.
...and frankly, difficulty was the whole purpose of that stupid Registry idea.
