I know a guy who is a top engineer (self-employed) who used Works
(and apparently STILL uses it).
That is a fly in the ointment, inferring that his decision-making ability is shaky.
(Joerg has recently done a Linux install which he runs in a VM,
so he isn't a complete lost cause.)  8-)

Novell's go-oo.org is gratis and can import M$Works files,
then convert them to M$Office formats and/or to OpenDocument Format (ODF).
go-oo is cross-platform and is a fork of OpenOffice.org.

OOo incorporates some stuff after go-oo has gotten it working (e.g. VBA macros).

The Wiki link in my OP also lists a command line utility for converting
(to ODF wrapper formats--which can be opened with OOo).
