Replacing all of Micros~1's apps which are capable of accessing the 'Net
is routinely the first step in attempting to secure Windoze.
You should already be aware that Internet Exploder and Outbreaks In Excess
are ax wounds just waiting to be infected.
The third member of that stinking triad of insecurity is WMP.

Oops. Forgot to mention
VLC is yet another app that dropped support for Windows 98 in recent versions:

Luckily, being Open Source Software,
older, still-valid versions are readily available:
http://google.com/search?q=intitle:index-of+vlc+0.8.6i
...and, as mentioned, replacing your out-of-support OS
with one that actually has support and is more secure by design to start with
would demonstrate an enlightened approach to security.
The fact that a whole family of replacements is available gratis
and that those can be test driven without installation should be persuasive points.

MEPIS antiX has already been suggested as being apt for Win9x-era boxes.
Linux Mint Xfce Edition or Fluxbox
Edition
take a different but equally valid approach to a complete-out-of-the-box OS
for ancient iron.
