That sounds like WebTV (which M$ bought up).
It doesn't have the *strip away the training wheels and it's a real computer* aspect,
so I'm not seeing that as a competing product.

The items that I pointed to all use a software layer
which is not so different from the interchangeable Linux desktop environments
(Gnome, KDE, Xfce, Fluxbox, LXDE, Enlightenment, ROX)
or window managers (IceWM, FVWM95, BlackBox, Windowmaker, Ratpoison...),
they are all just dumbed down and tarted up.
