For what 95 percent of folks need, the defaults work fine--just like Windoze
EXCEPT that Linux **comes** with a collection of REAL apps.
...and Linux forums very much like this one exist for the problems.
What I was addressing by "band-aids" was the need to STILL run an anti-virus app
with ANY form of Windoze. Just ridiculous.
That's the mark of an OS that is Defective By Design.

Yeah. It's not the worst idea I've ever heard.
...though point & click GUIs are really commodity items here in 2009.

1) Put the Linux CD in your drive.
2) Boot to it.
3) Click the desktop icons.
Point to the difficult part.
Linux should work for you out of the box (e.g. no chasing down device drivers;
no reboot, reboot, reboot, reboot, reboot, reboot to get things working).
If Linux works for you: great.
If it doesn't: no harm, no foul, no cost...and you can always try another distro.
