Usually, folks get their increased failure rates when Summer rolls around
and increased ambient temperatures exacerbate overheating problems.
Your stuff just had to be different. 8-)

A lot of the browser speed gains
have been due to concentrated work on the the JavaScript engines.
SpiderMonkey was Netscape's and Mozilla inherited that.
TraceMonkey is the evolution which first shipped with Firefox 3.5.
V8 for the Google Chrome browser[1] has really been spurring competition
as has Webkit's SquirrelFish.
Even M$ has been paying attention and giving it a try,
making improvements to JScript
--which is integrated rather than being a separate entity from Trident.
If you want to try out their brand new JavaScript engine called Carakan,
Opera just released what's being called a "pre-alpha" of 10.5
which is trying to grab the latest speed demon laurels.
[1] Noticed how Google has gotten as bad as M$ at naming stuff?
