Of course, a 10Mohm meter input isn't the best test for a battery.
You want to present a load to the thing on the order of what it might see.
In this case ~100uA would be a more than adequate test (~33kohm resistor).

The old soft-eraser trick usually clears those up.
|changed the IDE cable to the hard drive, and it's fine.
