Clearly, some program is trying to start up but being only partly successful. Probably
a virus of some kind.
1. First, try disinfecting your computer by using one of the on-line Virus scanners.
For example :
http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/us/
2. If the above isn't a complete cure, try this:
Go to START > PROGRAMS > STARTUP and delete any suspicious entries that might be
causing the unwanted program to load.
3. If the above isn't a complete cure, try this:
Download the program SYSTEM MECHANIC from the internet and use its excellent "Windows
StartUp Manager" function to disable whatever is trying to load at startup.
Iolo's current version of System Mechanic at http://www.iolo.com is useless to you
(currently, version 9 is for Windows XP only). You want version 3 or 4 for Windows
98. Try a Google
search for that.
4. If the above isn't a complete cure, try this:
(1) Boot to DOS instead of Windows.
(2) Use EDIT.COM (C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EDIT.COM) to read the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI
files (in C:\WINDOWS directory)
Example:
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
EDIT C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI
(3) Disable any line in WIN.INI that starts run= or load= (by putting a ; [i.e. a
semicolon] at the start of that line). Then save the changes.
(4) Use EDIT.COM to read the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Example:
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(5) Disable any line in AUTOEXEC.BAT that looks suspicious (by typing REM at the
start of that line). Lines in a .BAT file that are only REMarks are ignored and so
are not loaded on system startup. Then save the changes.
5. If the above isn't a complete cure, try this:
(1) Boot to DOS
(2) At the DOS prompt, type the following -
SCANREG /RESTORE
Follow the on-screen instructions displayed. By default, Windows keeps five backups
of the Windows Registry. So this method enables you to install a working version
of the Registry from before the problem arose. They're listed by DATE. You should
install the OLDEST.
If the virus is loading from deep inside your Registry, this could replace the Registry
with a previous (uninfected) version.
6. If the above isn't a complete cure, it is theoretically possible to boot to DOS,
and to delete individual Registry keys from DOS. It's a sure fire solution to a Registry
infection. But the method is quite complicated, so it's best to try all the above
solutions first.
