I linked to an annoyances.org post which describes that.
You need to follow what it says EXACTLY.
If JmC's trick doesn't work, then move on to my *long* suggestion
--and even if his trick does work, I still recommend running a surface test.
|As I said, it will only boot up in safe mode,

On the Boot Manager screen,

you DON'T want choice #6, which is **Windoze**.
You want choice #5, which is REAL DOS.
|And when I tried to run things from the run line in windows it would not work.
|
That is why I said REAL DOS.
|Also, please bear in mind that I cannot type,
|
*You* can't?--or **the equipment** can't?
When you get to REAL DOS, then decide if you can't.
|Why do you think it is a hard drive problem when the blue screen error says VXD?
|
The age of the box.
Your *can't type* comment extends my suspicion.
...and where do you think the device drivers reside?
|I thought that was a video driver problem
|
That is the *first* thing you are seeing wrong;
I suspect there are other problems which will reveal themselves.
Be prepared for that.
DOS doesn't use VXDs, so see what happens there first.
If restoring an old copy of the Registry gets you up and running,
I still say do a SCANDISK on the whole platter.
(If Windoze is running, that's the Thorough button.)
