you should still be able to ping the dns, even you have them disabled,,, the only 
reason you are not able to ping them is you are not conected,,

to lower you system resorses,,
goto start>run>MSCONFIG
click the tab for startup group items,,
uncheck what you dont need,,, or want,,
you should not get rid of systray,, you can but should not,,
and you should not get rid of,,,scan registry,
that should bring you up to the high 80's or low 90's
then whne your internet dont work they have to find the real problem....
