Bad images in IE 5.5

I should start by saying that I'm actually running Win2k pro, but I remember this
problem happening before I moved from Win98, so perhaps a fix would be the same.
The problem I'm having is that images views in IE 5.5, like simple web-page images,
are appearing somewhat corrupted. They actually do appear (you can see what they
look like) but there is a lot of distortion, like what you would see while watching
a DVD that had some area on the screen containing a lot of the same color. Many
areas of the images are blocky, like there is bad anti-aliasing on an image which
is perhaps a dithering problem? I tried unchecking and checking Smart Dithering
under IE's Tools/Internet Options/Advanced, but that has no effect. Opening images
saved from the same web-page (jpeg) and using ACDSEE to view them (or any other graphics
viewing program) displays the pictures perfectly. It is only in IE that the pictures
are showing distortion. Does anybody have any idea what this is, or how to correct
it? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Aleaxander
