Thanks for the info, Jimi. I ran SFC and it said that the file "user.exe" might be corrupted. I clicked "Ignore" because I don't have the installation disk (d'oh!). It also found a large block of .dll files with similar names beginning with "d...something". I was planning to reinstall all these files when I found the installation disk, and any other ones that turned up. However, a little more than halfway through, it performed an illegal operation (trafficking drugs, maybe) and shut down. So I didn't find anything regarding my problem yet, unless the user.exe thing is causing the problem. Thanks anyway! I guess I'll just try, try again.
