Windows Me - Microsoft Madness

I have experienced a few problems with my computer not recognising my Microsoft
Intellimouse Optical after a power cut.
I have been using Windows ME for the past 4 months. During this time there have
been 3 power disruptions and when I booted up the computer when the power came back
on, Windows started but the cursor was frozen on the screen and the mouse wouldn't
respond. Using the 'Restore' utility didn't help either. Luckily I had backed up
C drive using Norton Ghost and after restoring a previous image (on all 3 occasions,
the mouse worked fine. Have others experienced similar problems with WinME and the
Intellimouse Optical and is there a fix/solution?
Also I have also have problems with my Soundblaster Live Value sound card. I am
using the latest WinME drivers (version 2.1.5.0) which work OK but if I load the
Creative Liveware software, Windows will not shut down. If I remove Liveware, there
are no problems but I would like to have the extra features this software provides.
I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Steering Wheel and gamepad (the steering wheel is connected
via a USB port and I'm using controller software 4.0, and the gamepad plugs into
the soundcards gameport. The steering wheel works fine with a number of games including
Need For Speed 3 and F1 2000 etc but refuses to work with Microsoft Midtown Madness
2 (although the gamepad works). I also get terrible graphic anomalies when using
nVidia WHQL Detonator3 drivers ( I've tried all 7.XX versions and even version 12.41
but still have the problems, even when running the Direct3D tests under Direct X
8. I am currently using nVidia reference drivers version 6.31 and these are fine
(but I thought WHQL drivers would be compatible with Microsoft programs).
My system comprises of the following:
ASUS CUSL2 Motherboard with Intel 815e chipset - Bios version 1.06a
Intel Celeron 800 mhz CPU
256 meg PC100 SDRAM
Creative Labs Geforce 256 32 meg DDR AGP graphics card
Creative Soundblaster Live Value soundcard
MS Natural PS/2 Keyboard and MS Intellimouse Optical
Seagate 20 gig HD
48 X LG CD Rom
