Good question, Steve, and I'm glad you posted it. I've been working on a similar disk in preparation for copying to a CD-R to send to a friend, and your thought about the viewer made me take a better look at what I had done.

Basically, the answer to "is it do-able?" is "yes, with the right software". I have two CD-RW drives on my desktop (don't ask why), a Plextor PXW1210A, and a Sony CRX145E. The Plextor came with software from both Plextor and Adaptec (now Roxio), but Pressi's abCD, which came with the Sony, has proved to be the best for working with either drive. With it, I never have to close the disk, and can move it from drive to drive, or computer to computer.

The big question is whether you intend for the disk to be portable from one computer to another.

As long as you use the disk on a computer that has a CD-RW drive compatible with the software used to format the disk, and the software is installed on that computer, you can both write to it and read from it. If you move the disk to a computer with a CD-ROM drive but not a CD-RW drive, or to one with a CD-RW drive but not the software, or to one with a CD-RW drive incompatible with the software, you'll be able to read from it, but not write to it.

For your viewer, I'd suggest using IrfanView, which doesn't have to be installed. Set up the program on the computer with your CD-RW drive so that you can save the desired settings, and then you can use it on any computer with a CD drive, and you'll be able to view images not only on the CD, but on the host computer, as well.

Without getting technical, CD-Rs and CD-RWs are completely different media.

If you want to talk further about this, feel free to email me.

I am familiar with cd-r applications for music and other uses, but I have yet to use the cd-rw media. I have a use for it now with my genealogy interests. Specifically, I wish to have a rewritable disc that I can add scanned pictures of photos, pages from books, etc on an ongoing usage. I want to have a viewer progam on the disc, the sub-files, and continue to add files as I gather them or to change files on the disc and be able to basically use the disc on its own to launch a viewer program, see the contents, and later expand the files on the disc as needed. Is this a do-able thing with this media or do I have to leave the disc open until I am ready to close the disc, therefore not able to use the disc until I am finished with it? That brings me to another question. Is the only difference between a CD-R and a CD-RW is that the CD-RW can be erased and written over again, otherwise the left open or closed is the same???
