Trying to set up a network between 2 computers AND the internet Saturday, June 16, 2001 at 10:21 pm Windows 98 Annoyances Discussion Forum Posted by Mikey (1 messages posted) Hi, I've been having major problems over the last year setting up a network at home between two computers PLUS cable internet access from one of the computers. This is the situation... I've got 2 network cards on one computer. A 'D-Link Ethernet' 10/100 Mb card AND a 'EZ Connect USB Ethernet' On the other computer I've just got one network card, A 'D-Link Ethernet card' (the same one as on my first computer). I want to set up a network with my D-Link cards and connect to the internet from my first computer using the USB EZ Connect Ethernet card. I've tried everything but nothing seems to work properly. When I just install my USB EZ Connect card I can easily connect to the internet. Once I install the D-Link card amazing things begin to happen. The internet doesn't work any more. Neither does the network. It appears to be trying to use the USB Card to connect the network and the D-Link card to connect to the internet (the other way around than it should be) and I have no idea why. As soon as I disable the D-Link card from the hardware profiles, the internet works again. Another funny thing happens, originally when win 98 was installed the Dial-up Networking Adapter installed itself. When the dial-up adapter exists on the computer and both network cards are turned on, the internet appears to work but the network still doesn't. My theory is that when the D-link is connected, it tries to use the USB->TCP/IP protocol to connect the network (which is why the internet doesn't work) but when Dial-up networking protocol is installed it tries to use that instead leaving the USB alone and so the internet works again. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated since I've been banging my head against the wall literally and figuratively over the last few months, mostly just giving up and being content not to have a working network.
