I have a question about Getting Rid of the Little Yellow Speaker in the Tray:

The problem is when i clicked on the yellow speaker then a little slider volume control would appear in the taskbar. However, when i click on it i cant get it to maximize. then i click the yellow speaker again. i keep getting the icon in the taskbar but cannot get a window to open so that i can adjust the volume. this is really annoying because a week ago i used this very same control to mute the volume so as not to disturb my boyfriend's sleep. Now i cant hear anything. If i right-click on the icon in the taskbar i get a box that gives me the option to minimize but not to maximize(grayed out). if i click restore nothing happens. Has this happened to anyone else? Besides being unable to remove certain non-Microsoft icons from my desktop this is the most egregious annoyance i have encountered yet.
