Question about 'What to do about error messages during Windows startup'

I have a question about What
to do about error messages during Windows startup:
Upon start up today I recieved an error message saying that a file that ran windows
or a windows application was missing. It went on to say that I should remove the
application it was associated with and reinstall it. The file was vserver.vxd.
Then windows 98 immediately shut down. I found this file and copied it from A: to
C: from the dos prompt. Now windows just begins to start and then shuts down without
any warning. Ideas?
